LEGISLATIVE UPDATE BY STATE REPRESENTATIVE JIM DECESARE

Coalition to Protect Kentucky Jobs Formed

I am always looking to inform you about potentially harmful policies that could hurt business.  One of those harmful policies is the Employee ‘Forced’ Choice Act (EFCA), a bill with a misleading name that has been introduced in four straight sessions of Congress.

Fortunately, a group has formed to fight for Kentucky jobs and businesses.  The Coalition to Protect Kentucky Jobs (CPKJ) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization seeking to educate the public on the economic dangers of EFCA.  This legislation is the top priority of national union bosses who have promised to attach it to unrelated bills if they can’t pass it on its own.

EFCA would eliminate the secret ballot from union organizing elections, instead allowing union bosses to pressure employees into signing union cards while watching and intimidating them via the bill’s “Card Check” provision.

EFCA will also create forced binding arbitration.  If management and the workforce cannot agree on a contract, the federal government would send an unelected bureaucrat to dictate the terms of a contract.  Both parties, with no recourse to appeal, will be forced to abide by this contract for a period of no less than two years no matter how bad the terms may be.

In short, workers may find themselves in a union they didn’t vote for laboring under a contract written and forced upon their employer by the federal government.

I support the efforts of the Coalition to Protect Kentucky Jobs to educate the public and to further inform Kentuckians about where candidates for federal office stand on the bill.  The CPKJ has sent a survey to candidates and will publicize the results so that all citizens can be aware of their position on this job-killing legislation.

EFCA would have a devastating impact on Kentuckians, and I am a supporter of the CPKJ’s mission.  I encourage you to visit www.ProtectKentuckyJobs.com to sign the petition and register your support for the CPKJ.  You can find the CPKJ on Facebook and Twitter (@protectkyjobs), and they will be making information available to the public on a regular basis.

The CPKJ is a non-partisan group that doesn’t endorse or oppose candidates for office.  It simply seeks to educate the public about policies that, if enacted, could severely hamper Kentucky’s economic recovery.  Hopefully, the people of Kentucky will hear the message loud and clear.
